Academic Challenge Team

Who Should Come: Students who know a lot of info beyond their grade level. There is a minimum grade requirement of a B in all classes and students who tryout must score high on the test given.

Meeting Time/Dates: Wednesdays 3:20 – 4:20. Meets start at 4:00.
Purpose/Description: This is a team of high achieving students who compete against in the region (not just the district) against other middle schools in a set up similar to Quiz Bowl.
Art Club
Sponsors: Jamie Smith
Who Should Come: Semester 1: 7th & 8th grade Semester 2: 6th grade. Limited spaces available (25) Sign-up required.
Meeting Time/Dates: 3rd & 4th Fridays during Flex & Advisory (7:45-8:45)
Purpose/Description: Students will come to create a teacher provided art project or a project of their own choosing.
Battle of the Books
Sponsors: Wendi Michael
Who Should Come: Any student who reads the summer reading books and wants to compete against other students regarding the books.
Meeting Time/Dates: All grades, Advisory on Tuesdays (instead of SSR), in library
Purpose/Description: Students read the 10 BoB books and have practice competitions until a final team is formed that will battle other middle schools.
Board Game Club
Sponsors: Ms. Bogucki
Who Should Come: Any student who is interested in playing board games that are non-role playing. Bring your favorite game.
Meeting Time/Dates: Mondays, 3:15-4:30 (Parent pick-up required) in Room 612.
Purpose/Description: Allows students to explore various board games in a friendly social setting.
Book Club

Who Should Come: All Grades Welcome

Bulldog Buddies/ Unified Club

Purpose/Description: To create an environment that includes the Special Olympics Champions School model of Unified Sports and Health, Inclusive Youth leadership and whole school engagement.

Girls on the Run

Purpose/Description: Trained coaches host a 6th-8th grade program in their community to inspire girls to value what makes them unique. Together, teams uncover confidence and understand the importance of physical and emotional health.

GSA

Meeting Time/Dates: Select dates (announced ahead of time) after school from 3:30pm-5:00pm in the Chorus Room (RM 616).
Purpose/Description: This club will allow students to immerse themselves in the grandeur of Opera through a partnership that the Fort Mill School District has with The Metropolitan Opera in New York City, NY. Students will come together on select dates (announced ahead of time) after school from 3:30pm-5:00pm to be prepped by a team of interdisciplinary teachers for the upcoming production then attend a LIVE stream of the work in a local movie cinema on a Saturday afternoon (announced ahead of time).

Pep Band

Who Should Come: Selected 7th/8th GHMS Band students through interest and director selection
Meeting Time/Dates: 2 Flex/Advisory Rehearsals & 2 After School Games. Runs in January and students perform at one boys game and one girls game.
Purpose/Description: To learn and practice pep band music, perform at home basketball game for boys and girls
Recycle Club

Who Should Come: Anyone in Kiggans HR with no school work and is willing to help.
Meeting Time/Dates: Mondays during Advisory
Purpose/Description: During Flex homeroom collects recycling for the entire school. We are working to expand to the lunches to decrease waste.
Student Council

Who Should Come: Students apply at the end of the school year for the next year (6th graders apply at the beginning of 6th grade)
Meeting Time/Dates: Friday during Advisory (Club time) meeting with small groups as needed
Purpose/Description: Create a culture of positivity at GHMS, support GHMS students and teachers, advocate for GHMS students on important issues, train students to be leaders at school functions
WEB

Who Should Come: 7th grade - teacher recommendations, 8th grade - application
Meeting Time/Dates: 4th Monday of each month during Advisory to encourage inclusivity and transition 6th graders to middle school.
Purpose/Description: To encourage GHMS to be a place "Where Everybody Belongs"; we also work on teambuilding and problem-solving skills as students transition into 6th grade as well building leadership skills in our leaders.
Yearbook

Purpose/Description: Create the 2023-2024 yearbook
You Be the Chemist
Sponsors: Gene Eberhardt
Who Should Come: 7th and 8th grade only. Students must pass the "Qualifier Exam" which will be given the first week of October. There are two teams of four students each, so 8 students in the program total.
Meeting Time/Dates: Time and Day(s) are TBD. The season starts in October and ends in March. We will participate in the challenge virtually in March.
Purpose/Description: The Chemical Education Foundation (CEF) sponsors a program called, "You Be the Chemist." Teams participate in a Regional Challenge where they answer timed questions. Throughout the season, they also create a video response to the year’s theme where they form a company that has come up with an innovative solution to a problem.
